The risks of the ‘Lone Modeller’

According to the poll carried out on RMWeb in January 2023, a huge 81.4% of modellers prefer to model alone! We want to change that. Many of our members have their own projects and layouts, some of which can be found on our Layouts page, however lone modelling prevents modellers from being able to expand their knowledge, and looses out on the social aspect of the hobby.

We regularly hold modelling workshops, where members can learn new skills and techniques which are introduced to the club. This has included in the past figure painting, tree making, and model building construction.

Eliteism and access for all

Many people may fear that model railway clubs are for elite modellers. We are all learning, and learn best through our club endeavours together.

Another aspect of club membership is the ability to be part of club projects. If you are short on space and cannot fit another layout in your house, club membership allows you to expand your modelling abilities without filling your house with another layout.

Advanced modelling equipment

Want access to equipment such as 3D printing or laser cutting, but without the cost? A club is a great way to introduce this equipment and their techniques to members. The Oxford & District Model Railway Club has both access to a 3D printer and Laser cutter for the exclusive use of club members only.

Social Events

We also offer many social activities such as Barbeques, and trips to museums such as Didcot Railway Centre and Pendon Museum.

Requisites for Membership

Our only main requite for membership is your age, and of course, an interest in railway modelling. We need you to be over 18 years of age. Other than that, an enthusiasm to get involved with club projects is very welcome. We like to do more than drink tea and eat biscuits (Although they are never far away!).

If you are interested in becoming a member, and want to know more, then please use the Contact Us form, and one of our committee members can get in touch. They can talk about where we meet, plus our yearly membership fees.
